Are We There Yet?

A patient told me how she's trying to convince her friend to see me because she's given up on getting pregnant.

Friend's response: "Already tried acupuncture"

Me: "How long did she try?"

Friend: "About 3 months"

Me: "Well, that's easy to know why it didn't work.  She didn't stick with it long enough."

So, let me straighten out expectations and ground them in reality.

For a healthy woman in her prime (that means late teens and early 20s), the chances of getting pregnant in any particular menstrual cycle is only about 25%.  That number goes down as the woman gets older.

For a woman in her 40s, it's less than 10%.

If you're a typical woman, you have a period every 28-30 days.  Out of that month, your fertile window period is only about 3-5 days.

To make it crystal clear, if you don't get pregnant in those 3-5 days, that's an entire month that's gone.

So to expect acupuncture or any holistic treatment to increase your chances from 10%-25% success rate to 100% success in 3 months isn't realistic.

Most women will take at least 6-12 months.  Even longer if there are more issues such as age, male factor, irregular cycles, etc.

Acupuncture is not a magic bullet.

It requires patience, commitment, and faith.

But, for many who stick it out, it's well worth the journey.
