Scents and Non-Sensibility

Next time, you spritz on perfume or cologne and use scented products, consider this...

More than 95 percent of the chemicals in synthetic fragrances are derived from petrochemicals.

Fragrance is a combination of chemicals used to create a distinct smell.  This combination is protected legally as a "trade secret" so the actual ingredients do not need to be disclosed.

These chemicals include:

  • benzene derivatives
  • aldehydes
  • phthalates
  • and thousands more (over 3,100 stock chemical ingredients are used by the fragrance industry)

Their danger?  They can cause cancer, birth defects, nervous-system disorders, allergies, and more.

Phthalates in particular have been shown to:

  • disrupt hormone activity
  • reduce sperm counts
  • cause reproductive malformation
  • have been linked to liver and breast cancer, diabetes, and obesity

If that isn't enough, fetal exposure to phthalates has been linked to autism, ADHD, and neurological disorders.

Solution: Read labels carefully.  Buy products that do not have "fragrance" in the label.  Make your own scents with essential oils.
