How the Statue of Liberty can be Our Guide

The plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty reads:

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I immigrated to the US with my parents when I was 3yo.  We struggled a lot.  There was a period when my parents, brother, and I lived in a tiny 1 room apartment with a community bathroom and kitchen shared by the other occupants on the same floor.

Obviously, my parents worked their way through the difficult times.  We are now able to enjoy the many opportunities available to us. because of the generosity of America's immigration laws.

What makes our country so great is its diversity.

It's the intersection of the different cultures and points of view that is fertile ground for the vast creativity our country is so admired for.

Unless you're 100% Native American, every one of us is an immigrant or a descendant of an immigrant.  It's ironic that some don't seem to remember that part of their family lineage.

Our stories are all different and should be honored.

Having compassion for others also means having compassion for ourselves.  They are not mutually exclusive but go hand in hand.

We are often our own worst critics.  Our own personal bullies.

Until we can learn to have no judgment.  During difficult times, we need to remember that we do the best we can given the circumstances.  That is all we can ask of ourselves.

We are just fine the way we are.
