A love-hate relationship
We love the food.
We hate the seemingly uncontrollable urge to stuff ourselves with crap.
However, food cravings are merely a way for our bodies to tell us that something's off. They are symptoms of internal imbalance and deficiencies.
The 2 most common reasons I see for food cravings are:
Because of the incessant messaging about eating lean and cutting out fats, women aren't eating enough healthy saturated fats to stay satiated. Fats are essential for each of the 100 trillion-ish cells in your body. They are also needed for proper brain function (in aspiring mom) and development (in future baby).
I recommend my fertility patients eat the equivalent of 6 tablespoons of saturated fat every day. In fact, about 50-70% of your caloric intake should come from fats.
Sources of healthy saturated fat:
- grass-fed butter
- grass-fed ghee
- organic coconut oil
- grass-fed red meat (beef, lamb, bison)
- nuts (organic, raw, unsalted)
2. Emotional fulfillment.
Are you using food to satisfy emotional needs?
Lonely? Bored? Unhappy? Unfulfilled? Scared?
Identify the emotion so you can figure out how to address it. The hard part is being honest with yourself about why you feel the way you do. If you can do that, you can make positive changes in your diet and emotional health.
It's important to address persistent food cravings. Cuz if you don't, they can derail you from eating a healthy diet that improves your fertility.
