Santa made me cry

I really, really wanted to take my girls to see "Wonder Woman" so we could bond over the whole girl power thing.

But their dad beat me to it even though I called dibs first.

Bah, a pox on him for that.

It's like when my kid called shotgun yesterday for the passenger seat but her friend slipped in under her arm as she's opening the door.  WTH?!?  Luckily, mommy dearest (that's me) saw the whole thing, came to the rescue, and ejected the friend into the backseat.  Score!

Anyhoo, I really wanted their first exposure to Wonder Woman to be with me.

As a kid, I used to watch Lynda Carter fly her invisible jet and lasso unsuspecting villains into telling the truth.  That was my first exposure to how bad-ass a woman could be on TV.

Wonder Woman was my first TV role model followed by Charlie's Angels.

But before them was my mom.

She immigrated to the US when I was 3yo.  My parents came during the holidays.

Santas were on every corner.  Loud, big, white, fat guys with huge beards that scared me and made me cry.  Hmm, maybe that's why Xmas doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies.

She knew no English and had only a few hundred dollars.  She left her entire, very large family behind so that her kids could have more opportunities.

She worked her ass off in a very humble profession, as a typist for Chinese newspapers.

It's that nose to the grindstone and "just do it" attitude that enabled her to give me and my brother the opportunities we now have.

She's the role model that  I grew up with.  She's part of the reason why I'm not afraid to roll up my sleeves and do the hard work to make my dreams come true.
