Here's my New Year plan for you while you're TTC

Happy New Year!

Since it's the first day of 2018, let's set the tone so that you can move into the year with your best foot forward, shall we?

Improving fertility (or really any goal)  is about having a vision and creating the strategy to make that vision a reality. 

And part of your vision is to have a healthy child.

Many women turn to IVF and inseminations if they haven't gotten pregnant after a few months.

That's all well and good.  But those are techniques.  Tactics, really.  

Without a vision and strategy to reach the goal, tactics are hit and miss. And the low success rates for IVF and IUI in older women prove it.  

So you need a vision to return to.  Otherwise you won't know why you're spending all this time, energy, and money.  

A vision is just that.  Something that you see as a possibility in your mind's eye.  You can't touch it.  You can't smell it.  It's because it's not a reality.  Yet.

A vision will last only as long as your faith in it holds out.  

So you need a strategy in place to move you closer to your goal.  If, over time, you don't feel like you're progressing, motivation disappears.  And along with that, your vision.

Because getting pregnant is an all-or-nothing goal, it can be difficult to stay motivated, especially because at the end of the day, you really don't have full control over the result.   It's not like losing weight where each pound (or kg) you lose keeps you inspired and you have 100% control over that outcome.

So when trying to get pregnant, I believe part of that strategy should be to attain optimal health of the body, mind, and spirit - elements you can manage. 

The more that you can make your environment (external and internal) favorable to the outcome you want, the better your chances. 

So set goals from the inside out.

What I mean is...

Start with the type of person that you want to become...

That is...a happy, stress-free woman in a loving relationship enjoying her pregnancy with a healthy baby growing right on schedule.  A patient, kind, loving, generous mother.  

And trust that the results will follow from that identity.

Let me explain...

Obviously, the goal is not just to get pregnant.  But to be pregnant with a HEALTHY baby that will go to term.  So work on becoming a healthy mom-to-be that makes smart food choices while you're trying to get pregnant.

Babies have been shown to sense stress in utero.  So do things that will reduce stress BEFORE getting pregnant.  Like acupuncture (I'm in San Diego for that!), massage, spa days, girls' night, hot sex.  Whatever.

You want to be happy and enjoy your pregnancy.  So do more of what makes you happy in this pre-conception period.

If you're snapping at your loved ones, develop patience and emotional restraint.  

In short, become the person you want to be NOW.  Don't wait until you're pregnant to make the changes.  Work from the inside out, not the outside in.
