The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire!

In 1904, the Great Fire of Baltimore raged through downtown Baltimore.

It torched 70 city blocks, destroyed over 1500 buildings, burned out 2500 businesses, thus throwing 35,000 people out of work.  Over 1,200 firefighters and 1200 national guardsmen were called in, along with 2000 soldiers and sailors.  It took 2 days for 37 fire engines, including those from neighboring cities, to control the fire.

One of the obstacles to containing the fire more quickly was that non-Baltimore fire hoses wouldn't fit into Baltimore's hydrants, rendering them completely useless.  Only Baltimore fire hoses would work.

Unfortunately, it took an epic disaster to prompt national standards for hose and hydrant couplings in order to prevent similar incidents.

Often, in our own lives, it takes a "disaster" to motivate us enough to make positive changes.
