Acupuncture does NOT help IVF patients

Acupuncture does NOT help IVF patients.

At least, that's what a study published earlier this week would like to have you believe.

The findings of the study are: "In this randomized clinical trial of 824 women, the rate of live births was 18.3% among women who received acupuncture vs 17.8% among women who received a sham acupuncture control, a nonsignificant difference."

The authors' conclusion:  "Among women undergoing IVF, administration of acupuncture vs sham acupuncture at the time of ovarian stimulation and embryo transfer resulted in no significant difference in live birth rates. These findings do not support the use of acupuncture to improve the rate of live births among women undergoing IVF."

So here's the dealio...

As an acupuncturist myself, I'm actually not surprised by the results.

Because for this study, acupuncture was given a whopping 3 times.  I don't know many women who used acupuncture to help fertility, gave it 3 attempts, and expected success.

Acupuncture isn't meant to be a magic pill for chronic conditions, especially in the case of infertility.

  • Do you expect to go to 3 exercise classes and be fit as a result?
  • Do you expect to eat 3 healthy meals and lower your blood pressure or reduce your risk of a heart attack?
  • Do you expect to treat ANY health issue that's been persisting for years to disappear in 3 treatments of anything?  Whether it's acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, etc?

Almost all fertility clients who used acupuncture successfully on their fertility journey went to an acupuncturist for months.  Some years.

Acupuncture's purpose is not to focus on specific time points, like during ovarian stimulation or pre- and post-embryo transfer as was done in this study.

Acupuncture's goal is to address the root cause of fertility issues in order to strengthen the foundation so that when you do get pregnant, you have a health pregnancy

No acupuncturist would ever claim to help someone get pregnant in 3 treatments.  If he or she does, find another acupuncturist cuz this one is bamboozling you.

On top of that, acupuncturists don't just use acupuncture to improve fertility.  It's one tool of many.  We also use supplements, herbs, nutritional counseling, lifestyle recommendations, home therapies to shift a person to a healthier state.  Those are all therapeutic tools that work with acupuncture.

To have any significant impact on a woman's or man's fertility takes time.  There's just no way around it.  Our biology dictates that time limitation.

  • It takes about 90 days for the last phase of maturation for eggs.
  • It takes about 70 days for sperm to mature.

So if your MD starts to poo poo acupuncture, have him/her call me so I can educate him/her.
