Accept your diagnosis or be more...

As an Asian woman, I fight against stereotypes all the time.  It seems like a never-ending battle to forge my own identity, despite what society expects from me.

Having grown up in the U.S., I'm what you would call a "Twinkie" - yellow on the outside, white on the inside. Some Asians may find that disparaging so don't go throwing that word around to others!

Based on how I look, people expect me to be sweet and soft spoken.  It always cracks me up when I see how people react to my bawdy, foul-mouthed sarcasm.  I sometimes do that deliberately to get my jollies cuz it's so unexpected.  It makes my day.  The little things...

Just as "Asian middle-aged woman" doesn't even begin to encompass who I am, "advanced maternal age" shouldn't define you.

Do you know pregnancies in women over 35 are called "geriatric pregnancies"?  WTF?!?  I can picture a group of white, middle-aged men coming up with that flattering label. Effers.

Labels are convenient - to fit people into nice, neat boxes.  It's especially useful in western medicine where it's protocol driven based on your diagnosis.

The danger comes when you let these convenient labels of diagnosis like advanced maternal age, poor egg quality, low AMH, high FSH, endometriosis, PCOS, recurrent pregnancy loss define your entire reproductive capacity.

They limit your thinking cuz your world has condensed into this one narrow lens externally imposed by someone else.  It doesn't matter if s/he has a medical degree.

You are far more than a label.  Your fertility is far more than a blood test number.  We have survived as humans for hundreds of thousands of years because our bodies are incredible self-healing machines.

Be more than just a label.  Be a better you every day.  Make healthier eating choices.  Exercise.  Sleep.  Practice forgiveness of others and most importantly, of yourself.  That's how you improve your fertility.
