The myth of IVF, part 1

In my office, I usually see women after they've already gone through several rounds of IVF.

It's a rare woman who comes in BEFORE her first IVF to prepare.  Those women I commend in having done their research.

Cuz from talking with thousands of women in almost 20 years of clinical practice, it's pretty clear that most women have their expectations set too high when it comes to their fertility journey.

It's obvious to me (not necessarily to them) in many ways.

But it stands out like a fart during s-e-x when we talk about their IVF cycles.

Cuz they don't realize how UNSUCCESSFUL and EXPENSIVE it is.

So let's break it down, ladies...

1.  Success rate
Continuing the s-e-x know how guys think they're way better at getting you to the holy land than they are?  Yeah, that might be how you're thinking about IVF.

Some clinics and doctors inflate their IVF success rate, creating unrealistic expectations.

The unfortunate truth is that the likelihood of a full-term baby is ~48% for women under 35, dropping each year to about ~3% for women over 42yo.

In other words, if you're over 42yo, you have a 97% chance that the IVF will NOT work.

Here's how the live birth (babies to take home) rates actually breaks down in the U.S.

  • under 35, 48% success -> 52% failure
  • 35-37yo, 35% success -> 65% failure
  • 38-40yo, 22% success -> 78% failure
  • 41-42yo, 11% success -> 89% failure
  • over 42yo, 3% success -> 97% failure

You can use this calculator to figure out your chances with IVF.

You're welcome.

Let me be clear, I never discourage women from trying no matter what the odds are.  If that's what she wants.  I have seen way too many "miracles" in my patients to ever swallow the "It's impossible." Kool-Aid everyone else insists on drinking.

But you've gotta know what you're getting yourself into so that you can prepare accordingly.

Tomorrow I'll talk about the next big sheet of wool that get's pulled over your eyes... Stay tuned.
